This is why only looking at net income is a poor measurement of wealth. Sure, European employees could be making a lot more money. And have only a fraction of the time to enjoy that money. But seems to me that a better measure of wealth is how well you can afford to work less.

Its impossible to call someone on vacation because 99% of people do not give employers means of contacting them other than their physical mail adress. They can write a letter to me. (they wont) but they dont even know my private phone nr.

Not only it's not encouraged it's also pretty much illegal to call you on vacation. There exceptions to this rule, but you need a very good fucking reason like people are dying here kind of emergency

Most of my country takes vacation in August, it's school break time.

in the usa, california, your job must pay you on time, every time. if your paycheque is late they must continue to pay you as if you had been working that whole time clocked in until they do pay you. they also pay a huge penalty if it gets reported to the labor board. you dont need to sue, just tell the board and they handle everything.

At work we avoid at all cost to call anyone when they are on holidays. You need to be incompetent at your job if you need to do that.

Italy closes in August pretty much. Same with Portugal, many offices in Germany and France.

In my personal experience it’s usually the managers and seniors who rush new employees to contact Europe before the peak summer to get shit done and they would be confused as deadline would be in September and it’s only May/June, for this reason. Need to order some parts from Europe for September? Better order by May.

“Yeah your kids being disappointed about their mom not coming with them on a cruise vacation with dad has nothing to do with me, because it will be a cold day in hell before I will weeks/months of MY vacation plans who’s days I asked for in advance and was granted way before her cruise plans existed, and let her have my planned vacation days instead. Especially not after all the money I already spent once I got validation from work to take those days off for my vacation. Your ‘but I have kids and you/I don’t have them so my need for time off is not valid’ definitely won’t make give you my vacation days. Why should I miss out on my vacation just so you can go on vacation with your kids? Your last second vacation plans have nothing to do with me, and does not make me obligated to cancel weeks/months of plans and loose out on who knows how much money I already spent for my vacation to go when I plan to go, just so she can have her last second vacation instead.

Wait til they find out in some countries it’s illegal to bother someone on their vacation or off hours. Also, as an American who works for a nonprofit organization that also provides office closures (not a whole month, just a week), I really hope this becomes normalized here for everyone’s sanity. Honestly, its not US work culture. Its the Management culture in the US thats the biggest problem. These guys get fed by 'gurus' on how to 'motivate' their teams. Since said guru is talking about how they work 18 hours a day, work out 3 hours and sleep for 4 hours...often caking themselves in makeup and babyoil to look youg. These managers buy it. Ive met more bosses who were chill vs managers who come up like stuck up pricks with a chip on their shoulder.
